/ˈLāzē/
2012 has begun with the laziest three days off work ever, and it's been awesome. Pretty much all I've done is sat around and watched stuff. On New Year's Day I watched The Ides of March and All Good Things, which were probably my favourite Gosling films to date (though the latter was more due to Kirsten Dunst, I must admit). And over the last two days I've been watching the second generation of Skins through, again. Seriously so lazy. My excuse is that I worked a few days between Christmas and New Year, in atrocious weather and in the evenings. Which sucked. I've always considered myself a night owl, but when it comes to work I definitely prefer getting it all over and done with early in the day.
Back to normal (almost) from tomorrow, and then counting down the days until my annual leave later this month. Which I have absolutely no plans for, though hopefully will use that time more productively.
Obviously nothing of much interest has happened in my life when I haven't left home in three days. However I did find out that I won an Eyes of Common ring from Wallace Chapman's Street and City Photos blog. Which is extremely exciting. And also maybe another sign that I should stop being such a slob and practice what I pore over on street fashion blogs.

Forms of Flattery
My faux Yves Saint Laurent oval Arty ring from Romwe (or Retro Exaggerated Color Ring) arrived today! Obviously no one is going to mistake it for the real thing (I should be so lucky), but it's nicer than I expected considering the cheap price, and it sure keeps my back balance happier. This is the third item I've purchased from Romwe, and I definitely recommend them for New Zealand shoppers at least. Cheap prices and shipping, and reasonably fast delivery. I've become a little obsessed with rings this year- I need to become a manicure addict so my fingers are worthy.
While we're talking jewellery, not only do I need to visit my dear sister in Palmerston North to spend some quality time with her, I also need to check out the Lovisa branch there. Every main city but Wellington? Are you serious?
Get your own.
Get the real deal.

Interview: Sarah McCay
Sarah McCay is one busy lady! As a 26-year-old full-time artist and jeweller from New York, Sarah sells her beautiful work through her Etsy store and also finds the time to maintain a blog about her A Lost Feather brand, her life and a whole lot of gorgeous photography. She is definitely living one of my many dreams for my own future!
How old were you when you first started creating?
I started drawing and painting before I could write. Just like other little children I loved arts and crafts and that hasn't changed at all! I only started making jewelry two years ago. I especially love using my artwork in my jewelry designs.
Are your family members creative?
Yes, my mom's major in college was Fine Art. She became a teacher and she still paints unbelievably well.
What other work or hobbies are you involved with?
Aside from my own artwork and jewelry, I am a freelance designer and have worked on projects for independent blogggers/ artists and a few companies in corporate America. Before I decided to follow my dream of being a full time artists I worked in Marketing for Canon. I liked Canon, and still love their cameras of course, but cubicle life was not for me!
What artistic or jewellery making training do you have, and do you believe you have benefited more from formal lessons or your own experimentation in developing your style?
I took art classes all through my childhood and teenage years. In college I majored in Photography. My photography training has definitely helped strengthen my eye in many ways- balancing photos/paintings, understanding tonal range, and much more. I think it possible to learn to be an artist with no training, but it is helpful to have a teacher and a class full of students giving you constructive criticism- it helps you grow faster. As far as jewelry goes- I am self taught. I did take a couple of potter's wheel classes that taught me how to work with clay. They ended up being helpful since I do make a lot of clay pieces.
How do you record your ideas for new pieces? Do you keep a sketch book or journal?
I try to keep a journal, but I'm really bad at using it. I end up writing ideas all over the place and they end up in a big pile. I guess its kind of a journal- just a messy one. I do have a ton of journals though- I really need to start using them! I'm also pretty bad at using sketchbooks, but I'm trying to make it a habit to use them.
Do you have any routines that help you work best when creating?
I always have the tv on while I'm working, but I never look at it. I hear all these commercials and have no idea what they're selling. Lately I've been working while listening to the Harry Potter movies. I love Harry Potter. If I don't have he tv on I'm most likely listening to Mumford & Sons, Norah Jones, and The Honey Trees.
Do you remember the first piece of artwork or jewellery that you sold?
Yes, I do remember :) My first sale was to a coworker while I was at Canon. I had just opened my Etsy Shop and he saw it and immediately commissioned a portrait of his pet. It was actually a difficult painting- a hairless cat! It came out really great (thank gosh) and he was super happy. I was ecstatic. Also really nervous because custom work is nerve wracking- especially when the subject is so difficult.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
I was featured in an Australian Magazine called Home Beautiful back in February. I have the magazine page framed in my house. Also, more recently, a boutique in Brooklyn, NY picked up my jewelry line and my designs will be for sale in their shop in the next few weeks! I'm verrrrry excited!
Who are your favourite artists?
My all time favorite artist is probably Edward Hopper, but it kind of depends on my mood. I also love Salvador Dali. There are many artists out there today that I absolutely love as well, such as Emily Martin of "The Black Apple."
What inspires you?
Everything really.. if I look at it long enough. Mainly the great outdoors. Traveling to different places brings me a lot of inspiration.
Do you have a favourite medium and colour to work with?
Watercolors and pencil. I like working with blues when it comes to paint and gold when it comes to jewelry.
Do you have any tips or lessons you have learned from your experience working on commissions?
Commissions are a good percentage of my work right now. When working on a custom piece for someone you need to keep the lines of communication open. You want to make sure you're meeting their expectations while being loyal to your own style.
How many hours in an average week would you spend creating your artwork and jewellery?
That depends because part of my work is shipping, packaging, e-mails, website.. it's not just artwork all the time. At first it was hard to balance that- it still gets tricky sometimes. I'd say I spend 5-8 hours per day actually making art, but I work 10+ hour days normally.
Do you have any particular goals for the next five years?
In the next 5 years I'd like to be selling through many different boutiques and getting closer to my goal of owning my own shop. Opening my own shop will take a lot of work, so I'm not sure it can be done in the next 5 years, but it will be done.

Pretty Zoo jewellery collection
Zoe Weir is a New Zealander who lives in Europe and works as a graphic designer and illustrator. I didn't "meet" her in the blogosphere until she was already overseas unfortunately, but she seems like such a lovely person and her blog is one you should definitely be following.
Zoe's just opened an Etsy store selling the most adorable jewellery creations. My favourites are ovals of porcelain or glass showcasing her illustrations and framed by smooth, shaped wood. So ridiculously pretty, go and check out what else she has available.

Temptations
I have the mankiest hands- my nails grow into raggedy claws, and I can't even make nail polish last more than a day due to all my typing and painting. Yet still I lust after pretty (and in this case, pretty affordable) rings.

Just browsering, thanks.
It's pay day, and I've vowed to make no online purchases this week. The only non-essentials I'll be buying are some art supplies to get my next Monthly Painters' Challenge submission underway. To deal with this, I'm trying to only pay attention to online shopping that's out of my price range anyway.
This is not at all difficult when it comes to the Measuring Tape Sandals by Christian Louboutin, considering I wouldn't even spend $100 on a pair of heels, let alone several hundred (or thousand). Don't ask me who would actually buy them, nor where on earth they'd wear them. But they're fun to admire from afar.
Significantly more affordable are clothes, shoes and accessories from Irregular Choice. There sure are some pretty outlandish statement items for sale on there (these men's dress shoes, for example) but many of their jewellery items are the perfect amount of attention-seeking for me. The four rings below are my favourites.

My room.
The third bedroom in our flat is far too small to fit any kind of decent bed, but perfect for becoming my art space and dressing room, for want of a better term. I gave it a good clean up on Friday night, and I feel a lot better working on my next Monthly Painters' Challenge submission in a clear space.
On this post, Carly asked to see some better shots of the rings I was wearing, so I finally got around to taking some pictures in daylight.
An unfinished drawing, painting, and poster I ripped from a wall in town.
Two aeroplane ties, my necklaces, uncharacteristically organised drawers.
Han Cholo Sword Ring from Karmaloop (now 70% off by the way!)
Lovely Maoerduo Ring from Romwe

Fear not, I am still alive.
As you may have noticed, I've been a seriously slack blogger this past week! I don't really have a reason for this as such, more a combination of factors that have made me extremely unmotivated- finishing work slightly later than usual, having limited computer access, being super cold and suffering from minor winter blues... It is now Friday evening though, so I'm feeling a lot more cheerful (though still very tired!) I have a lot to do online over the weekend, so hopefully I'll make up for my absence a little.
I just thought I'd show you the necklace above that I bought a little while ago from Enchanted Leaves. It's a silver birch leaf, and it's just so beautiful! It's so dainty and delicate- light shines straight through each of the little dark holes visible in the image above. I'll definitely be buying some more items from their store in the future- pretty keen on the armadillo!
Wallace has become the sweetest, snuggliest cat since he was neutered. He's never been a shy cat, and always very tolerant of cuddles, but now he actually seeks us out for some snuggly love! So sweet. Although it can get a bit much when he gets in the way of typing- I had to kick him off my knee just to type this!

High and swift.
Yay, I won a cute little Air New Zealand USB stick keyring from their Twitter account last week, and it arrived yesterday! I have slowly accumulated a lot of aeroplane 'memorabilia' over the past few years, most significant of which is my tattoo obviously! But today I thought I'd show you guys the four little aeroplane necklaces I now own.
Top left is a Karen Walker camouflaged fighter jet necklace Charlie gave me. Probably the only KW I will ever own! Unless I carry through with actually making fashion more of a priority. Top right is a silver Pascoes pendant I got for my recent birthday from my wonderful friend Sarah. Bottom left is a cheap biplane pendant I bought from a little kawaii-type shop in the Left Bank mall. It's made of very soft metal, so the propeller's coming loose, the wings bend, and the wheels have come off... but I got good use out of it while it lasted! It's very, very similar to this listing on Etsy, so who knows where they actually come from. And bottom right is an adorable paper plane I also got for my birthday, from my longtime penpal and wonderful friend Anna.
As I was writing this I remembered three more plane-related jewellery items I didn't photograph! Maybe my slightly obsessive aeroplane collection will have to become a bit of a feature.
It's 10am on Saturday morning, and as usual it's freezing cold and raining outside. I hate winter. It's just so miserable. Not sure what I'll get done today, although I got a new tshirt and ring yesterday, so will have to take photos at some stage! A bit of cleaning probably wouldn't go amiss either. I find it so difficult to leave the computer/TV when the boys are at work and there's no competition for it! But I really should make my days off more productive... Also the reveal date for our first Monthly Painters' Challenge is coming up this week, so I better put the finishing touches on mine!
Have a great weekend, I'm sure you'll hear from me again later.
