Sunday Drive

On Sunday I went to Palmerston North with my parents to visit my sister Emily and take her out to lunch during a well-deserved break from nursing studying (so proud!) We ended up at The Bent Horseshoe Cafe, tucked in the foothills east of Tokomaru, which Mum had heard about online.

The building is an old schoolhouse, complete with a classroom blackboard for a menu and high windows on one side so as not to distract the students. But the opposite wall is all glass doors, opening out onto an outdoor dining area with grass beyond that and a view of the cafe's namesake Horseshoe Bend Reserve.

Emily and I ordered pancakes with berry compote and cream. Dad had the bacon and egg pie, while Mum was a little more adventurous and had kumara fritters with bacon, avocado and salad. All was delicious, coffee was good, service was perfectly pleasant. It's rather a distance from much of anywhere (unless you count Palmerston North... haha) but it seemed well worth the drive to me (forever passenger) and the live music nights they advertise are intriguing.

I'd definitely love to return in summer, to sit outside, and take a walk down to the river. Oh, and possibly the best bit - a table of crafts and giftcards and handbags for sale. I picked up a black glomesh purse in lovely condition and a decent size for only $20.

Manawatu

I've had a great weekend in Palmerston North with my little sister Emily (only clarifying the "little" part due to "twins?" comments on Instagram) I caught the bus up on Friday evening which was actually way nicer than I expected - double decker, air conditioned... seatbelts. Guess I was dreading the kind of buses we used for school trips.

Yesterday was a gorgeous sunny day, and hot. Apparently I missed some rare decent weather here in the capital too, but it was nice to be able to wear a floaty dress and have no fears of it blowing around. We went to the Arohanui Hospice Shop in Palmerston North which had some great stuff, and unlike most of Wellington's second hand/charity stores, everything was actually dirt cheap. I bought a few more framed pictures for the hallway, another wooden tray which I may or may not use as a painting surface, and a wooden shelf for spices in the kitchen - finally! Have wanted a spice rack type thing for ages.

After that we went with Emily's friend Nicki to Himitangi beach for typical beach activities - wading, sand dunes, swimming, ice cream, followed by a spa.

We had some dinner at Emily's before dressing up and going to some bars with Nicki and her flatmate for some cocktails and a spot of pool. I hadn't been out in Palmerston North in about four years, and it was fun. Quite different to Wellington from my experience... more sleazy boys, but less messy girls - so I'm not sure which is worse!

How was your weekend?

EDIT

Oh yeah, and that's another goal crossed off the list!
